For NAO, as for human soccer players in World Cup, it is collaboration that determines the result of a match, which is enabled by real-time communication.
Gesture making and recognition allow for real-time communication during the match. By picking up its teammates’ gestures and identifying its meaning through the gesture protocol, NAO can quickly make out the information conveyed and gesture back as a response, just as human does.
Real-time communication allows the robots to take on different roles in the match. A soccer team involves different roles and responsibilities, including to goal, to trap and to defend. Real-time communication enables the robot to exchange information with each other, like signaling to whom it will pass the ball.
Real-time communication also allows NAO to cope with unexpected situations in the competition. For instance, when its fellow member breaks down in a collision or when an obstacle falls ahead, NAO can quickly update the information and work out a new solution, making sure that the match can go on.
